Postgame Notes Penn State 22-Clemson 10

  • On the opening possession of the game, Clemson faked a punt that according to Dabo Swinney no one on the punt team other than punter Jack Smith knew was happening/ Smith checked to a deep pass to Ronan Hanafin, who wasn’t looking for a pass. The turnover over downs gave Penn State a first down at the Clemson 32 and led to a field goal.
  • Neither team could sustain much on offense in the first half. Clemson’s next four possessions after the opening one ended with three punts and a missed 33-yartd field goal by Nolan Hauser. The Nittany Lions, after their field goal,, had three punts and a turnover on downs on their next four possessions.
  • Clemson finally got on the scoreboard late in the first half. Cade Klubnikk had a 13-yard completion and a 13-yard run, and the Tigers moved to the Penn State 35. Klubnik,, however, was sacked for a loss of eight on second down. Klubnik hit Gideon Davidson for 13 yards on third down, and Hauser came on and booted a 48-yard field goal to tie the game.
  • Penn State came right back down the field going 48 yards in 10 plays and 52 seconds and finishing the half with a 48-yard field goal for a 6-3 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions dominated the third quarter. Clemson ran just eight plays for 18 yards while Penn State had 22 snaps for 111 yards.
  • Penn State was stopped on downs at the Clemson 28 to open the third quarter. A dropped pass on fourth and four turned the ball over to the Tigers.
  • Clemson then converted a couple of third downs to reach the Penn State 43, but a false start on third and six at the 39 followed by an incomplete pass led to a punt. That was Clemson’s only possession of the quarter.
  • Penn State started at own 11 with a little more than five minutes left in the quarter and drove to the Clemson 25 where Ryan Baker booted a 43 yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 9-3 lead.
  • After another three and out by the Clemson offense, Ethan Gurnkemeyer found Trevor Pena open in the middle. Clemson safety Ricardo Jones and cornerback Corian Gipson hit Pena together, but he broke free and went 73 yards for a touchdown. A failed two-point conversion made it 15-3.
  • Clemson responded as Klubnik completed five of six passes, and Penn State was called for a 15-yard pass interference. Adam Randall scored on a two-yard run to cut the Penn State lead to 15-10.
  • The Clemson defense, however, could not come up with a stop. A 35-yard pass to Devonte Ross moved the ball to the Clemson 27. Grunkemeyer finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Rappleyea for a 22-10 lead with 4:56 to play
  • On the last possession of his Clemson career, Klubnik hit a 27-yard pass to Christian Bentancour to get it started. The Tigers moved to the Penn State 36 when on 4th and 11 Klubnik was sacked on his final play with the Tigers. He was sacked four times on the day.
  • Clemson finishes the season with a 7-6 record. The loss snapped a four game winning streak for the Tigers. The Tigers fall to 27-25 in their bowl history.
