A running back on the USC board was scratched off on Thursday as Javarris Warner of LaGrange, GA, committed to Duke. But the Gamecocks, who have one running back commitment in Brayden Tyson, remain firmly in the hunt for Tre Segarra of Byrnes.
Segarra has made two official visits thus far, to Indiana and Stanford.
“It was a good time at Indiana and Stanford both. I got to learn a little bit about the schools,” Segarra said. “The locker room at Stanford, and it’s just the people that Stanford recruits. And then Indiana, the culture in the building, I would say, was the biggest thing. You could tell they just won a national championship. Everybody was really focused.”
Indiana just got a running back commitment on Wednesday, but Segarra said that does not impact his thinking, and Indiana remains in the mix.
This weekend, Segarra will take his official visit to LSU. His Tennessee visit will be on June 12th, and USC gets the final official visit the weekend of June 19th.
The Gamecocks have kept up their strong recruiting effort with Segarra, with Shane Beamer, Kendal Briles, and Stan Drayton leading the charge.
“I hear I hear from the staff pretty often,” Segarra said. “Just get ready for the OV. Get ready to have my official visit at South Carolina, a lot of different things that we could do, to make the most out of it. That’s kind of what the conversations have been recently.”
Segarra added that the selling points from the coaching staff focus on their efforts to land the best players in South Carolina.
“It’s a place that’s been built around the South Carolina players, especially the last class. They did very well in the state,” Segarra said. “It’s kind of, if you’re in South Carolina, you go to South Carolina. It’s the thing that they’re preaching on. Obviously, the proximity to my home is a huge piece for them. They’ve also got a good business school. And a very impressive running back coach with a great resume. So there’s a lot of upsell.”
Segarra’s parents are USC grads, so he grew up rooting for the Gamecocks. Will that help the USC cause? Time will tell, but comfort level will be a major part of his decision.
“The biggest thing is just my fit in the locker room and with the coaching staff,” Segarra said. “And, what does the offense look like with me in it? And then the educational piece as well, so I can get a meaningful degree and set myself up for life after football.”
Segarra does not have a set date for a commitment, but he said he’s aiming for the first week in July.
Segarra, who is also an accomplished soccer player, has rushed for 2834 yards and 29 touchdowns in his career, and has drawn comparisons to former Byrnes great running back and former Gamecock, Marcus Lattimore.
