One of the three uncommitted prospects to visit USC over the weekend was CB Kelvin Millington (6-4 185) of Bogart, GA. He’s been a primary target of head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray since he was offered in mid-April.
The Gamecocks had 48 more hours to show Millington how much he is wanted by them, and that mission was accomplished.
“It was awesome. It was a wonderful experience,” Millington said Sunday night. “They did a great job. My brothers loved it. I know my whole family loved it. It was an all-around great experience.”
One of the big moments of the weekend for Millington involved a teaching session from Gray, something he will benefit from this season.
“I learned a lot from Coach Gray,” Millington Said. Today, we had a film session, and he was showing me how he coaches his players. And then he was going to teach me new press techniques that I’ve never seen before, and I took something away from that. It was very impressive. I got better even though I was on a recruiting visit.”
Millington also got a good explanation from Gray about how he would be used in the Gamecock secondary.
“They talked all about that,’ he said. “They really liked my length and my speed. He was showing me clips of the corners playing press man. He would say, see right here, this is where you would play as a corner in our program. He was also showing me the development process, from taking one of the players who wasn’t that good when they first arrived to developing him. He was showing how this was him on the first day of spring, and then this was him on the last day of spring. You could see that the development was very impactful, and it was really good.”
The Gamecocks have been a strong contender for Millington since offering him. They are even stronger with him now.
“I was really liking them before, and I like them even more, if that makes sense,” Millington said. Probably at the top of my list. I just really like the way Coach Beamer runs things. How they set up their visit was just awesome. It didn’t feel like it was an OV where we’re going to do all this cool camera stuff, not talking about football, just try to make it fun, give you all this food, all this. It was actually informative. I learned something. I mean, they put us through a little mini workout, had the recruits compete against each other a little bit. It was just awesome to see stuff outside of the recruiting pitches.”
With that in mind, did he consider ending his recruitment on Sunday with a commitment to the Gamecocks?
“Yes, I’m not going to lie, it did cross my mind,” Millington said. “But then I was like, since my recruitment is kind of blowing up late, I’m like, this is my first one (OV). I probably should take the rest and see what it’s really like, see if this one really is as great as I think it is, or as I know it is, and kind of just play it out that way.”
So, Millington will continue with his official visits with Texas Tech this coming weekend, followed by Virginia Tech. He is planning on July 9th for a commitment date, though he said that could be pushed back.
