TE Caden Ramsey (6-5 210) of Cross will be coming off the board on Monday. Ramsey has set a 12:30 PM announcement at his school with South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Syracuse his final four. But his coach, Shawn Wright, tells us it’s more like a final two.
“I think he knows what he’s going to do,” Wright said. “He seems to be locked in on South Carolina and Virginia Tech. I know he had Syracuse and Georgia Tech, but I think it’s coming down to between South Carolina and Virginia Tech, and I think he kind of knows what he wants to do.
“Both schools did an awesome job recruiting him and making him feel as though they really want him a part of their program,” Wright continued. “I know he likes both coaching staffs. He’s just excited to be able to take his talents to either one of those schools.”
South Carolina tight ends coach Shawn Elliott offered Ramsey in June after putting him through an extensive workout in a late June camp.
“Elliott definitely likes him as a hybrid, one of those tight ends that doesn’t necessarily put his hands in the ground, but they can flank him out,” Wright said. “They want mismatches against linebackers and safeties. I had a conversation with Coach (Shane) Beamer, and he didn’t know he led the state in interceptions last year. He’s pretty sure his defensive back coach would want to try him as well. South Carolina’s obviously going to give him a chance to find a spot somewhere on that field if he goes there. Virginia Tech definitely likes him at the tight end spot.”
Whichever school lands Ramsey will be getting a special prospect according to his coach.
“He’s a very, very competitive kid,” Wright said. “His will to win, he just doesn’t like to lose. He’s now understanding how to practice at the level at which we want him to practice. That’s been a learning curve for him because he’s just so much more talented than the guys around him at Cross. I told him, being at one of these Power Four schools, the practices are going to seem like games when you get there. Now that he’s practicing the way we want him to, at least through these first two ballgames, he has taken off. We’re talking two interceptions, think he ran a kickoff back seventy-something yards the other night, and two receiving touchdowns. He’s on pace to have a really outstanding year barring injury.”
Wright said Ramsey plans to attend the USC game this Saturday against SC State, and he’s also planning an official visit with the Gamecocks for the following weekend.
Ramsey was an outstanding two-way performer last season. As a receiver, he had 46 catches for 749 yards and nine touchdowns. As a free safety, he led the state with 14 interceptions.
