WR Travis Johnson (6-4 185) of Chesapeake, VA is being hotly pursued by six schools, none of which seems to have an edge with him at this point as he continues with his remaining official visits. South Carolina is one of the six and had Johnson and his mom in for an official visit the first weekend of the month.
USC receivers coach Mike Furrey and head coach Shane Beamer did their best to lay it all out on the table for Johnson. The Gamecocks will have a need for a tall, speedy receiver in 2026, and Johnson fits that description perfectly.
“South Carolina was great,” Johnson said. “The culture is amazing. The offensive system is great. I just had a good time down there. Coach Furrey showed me how I can come in and play early, and play any spot for them and just ball out. I have a great relationship with Coach Furrey. It’s a great, genuine relationship. I trust him. I love Coach Furrey.”
Beamer has strong history in the state of Virginia, and he loves to recruit prospects from the Chesapeake Bay area. He’s done well in that territory, and he made it clear to Johnson he’s coming for him.
“He told me he needs me,” Johnson said. “We just had a great, genuine conversation. I love Coach Beamer. We didn’t even talk about football. That’s how genuine the conversation was. We talked about how school is going, how I’m doing, and how my family is doing and stuff like that.”
Speaking of family, Johnson has an aunt who lives in Blythewood and who came over to the campus to be a part of the official visit.
Johnson has also visited Indiana and Penn State. He will visit Michigan this weekend, followed by trips to Virginia Tech and Georgia before he announces on July 4th. As he takes these final visits, Johnson is looking to compare and contrast the six programs he’s considering to determine which one checks all three boxes for the qualifies most important to him.
“The development piece on and off the field, a winning organization and the culture,” Johnson said.
