LSU 7-USC 0 Game Summary

  • LSU completed the three game weekend sweep and extend the Gamecocks’ losing streak to five games. It’s the fifth time the Gamecocks have been shut out this season.
  • USC had five hits and struck out 11 times on Sunday. For the series, the Gamecocks totaled four runs on 15 hits and struck out 33 times, 11 times in each game. They also committed three errors on Sunday.
  • The Gamecocks didn’t get a runner as far as second base against LSU starter Zac Cowan until the seventh inning. In the eighth, the Gamecocks were able to load the bases with back to back singles, a wild pitch and a walk. But with two outs, Jake Randolph hit a ground ball to short for the force at second to end the threat.
  • Ethan Lizama doubled with one out in the ninth but was stranded. The Gamecocks finished 1-14 hitting with runners on base.
  • The Tigers got the only runs they would need in the third on a two-run homer off of USC starter Alex Valentin.
  • After a leadoff walk in the fifth, Valentin was replaced by Zach Russell. An error on KJ Scobey put runners on the corners, and another walk loaded the bases. . One run scored on a sac fly, and later in the inning, a second run was scored on a single to make it 4-0 LSU.
  • LSU made it 6-0 in the sixth with an error on left fielder Patrick Evans leading to one run, and a fielder’s choice scoring a second run.
  • LSU tacked on a final run in the seventh on a leadoff walk, two ground ball outs and a single.
  • Valentin pitched the first four innings and took the loss to drop to 1-3. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out six and walked two.
  • Cowan got the win for LSU and is 3-3. He pitched six innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
  • USC is now 22-27 overall and 7-17 in the SEC. The Gamecocks have no midweek game next week and will host Alabama for three games starting Friday.
