South Carolina wide receivers coach Mike Furrey has made a concerted effort to land WR Iveon Lewis (6-2 180) of Richmond, and Saturday afternoon, he will find out if he was successful.
Lewis plans to make is commitment announcement around 3:00 PM, and Monday night he said he has his decision down to the Gamecocks, Georgia and Kentucky. He was also considering Georgia Tech and Maryland.
Furrey has been out to see Lewis one time this spring, and he’s expected back on Thursday to watch Lewis perform in a showcase event for prospects in Richmond.
“He came to watch practice. It went smooth,” Lewis said. “He was telling me that I’m a great player and stuff like that. He said he’d love to coach me one day and stuff like that. The relationship with them has been great since my freshman year, so why not them?”
Lewis caught 41 passes for 1046 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He brings the size and skills to the position that Furrey looks for.
“I’m very physical. I know how to get in and out of my routes,” Lewis said. “When the ball is in the air it’s mine. When the ball is in the air, I go get it. And I’m smart on the field.”
Lewis visited USC this spring and got to see Furrey and his receivers in action.
“I went to a practice and I liked it a lot,” he said. “That’s somewhere I can see myself playing at, fitting in the offense.”
As of Monday night, Lewis said he still had not made his decision from his final three. He is weighing several factors this week in an effort to identify the right place.
“The main one, I’d say, relationships,” Lewis said. “Obviously, all of these schools I have a great relationship with. And also, where I’m going to fit in. How do I fit in the scheme. How they are going to use me. I’d say that plays a big part also. Another thing, where I’m going to be living at for the next three to four years. That’s something you’ve got to think about too.”
Lewis added that Furrey is doing all he can to show him that USC is that right place.
“These last couple of days, it’s been like that,” Lewis said. “They’ve been closing in. I know for sure if I go crazy with one of these programs, I’ve got a shot at achieving my dream.”
Which, of course, is reaching the NFL.
