Clemson quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley saw all he needed to see from 2027 QB Peyton Houston (5-11 198) of Shreveport, LA in camp on Sunday to make him his first offered quarterback for the 2027 recruiting class.
Houston impressed Riley and head coach Dabo Swinney with his throws and other quarterbacking skills, so it was a no-brainer for them to move forward with the offer, one that Houston was thrilled to receive.
“I can’t even describe what I was feeling in the moment,” Houston said. “That was an offer I’ve been waiting for.”
The camp also provided him with the opportunity to relationship build with Riley, who had been down to Louisiana to scout him in the spring.
“It was a blessing just getting around the Clemson staff again,” Houston said. “Just this time, I was able to compete and put on display the talents God has blessed me with. Coach Riley and I are close. He showed me how much of a priority I was. I enjoyed the time we had together because it was a lot of stuff off the field, which is most of the college life, so just seeing how he operates off the field was big to see, and the relationships he has with the players off the field.”
Houston spent time with Riley looking at it from the perspective of a Clemson starting quarterback. He also had a meeting with Swinney, where he learned more about what the head coach expects from his players.
“Being able to talk with Coach Swinney and the meaning behind the process and what he looks for in a student was a blessing to hear,” Houston said. “I got to talk ball and watch film as if I were a starter at Clemson to see how Coach Riley prepares his quarterbacks, and just seeing the campus and talking with President Clements was nothing but mind-blowing.”
Houston set a Louisiana 5A state record last season with 4480 passing yards with 38 touchdowns and six interceptions. That included a state record 817 yards in a single game. He also rushed for 690 yards and seven touchdowns. He completed 70% of his pass attempts.
As you might expect, his offer sheet is off the charts. Louisville, Auburn, Colorado, Baylor, Mississippi State, Georgia, Purdue, Tennessee, TCU, Texas, Pitt, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Ole Miss, Florida State, Arkansas and Arizona are just some of his offers.
