  • The Citadel completed its first season sweep of South Carolina since 2009, and the Bulldogs shut out the Gamecocks for the first time since 2009. Five Bulldogs pitchers combined on a three-hitter. They struck out six and walked three.
  • It’s the fourth time this season the Gamecocks have been shut out.
  • Christian Stratis had three hits and three RBIs for the Bulldogs, and Michael Gibson also had three hits and drove in one. The Bulldogs also stole three bases and did not commit an error.
  • The Citadel would score all the runs it would need in the top of the second on a two-out single to right by Stratis off Gamecock reliever Connor Chicoli.
  • South Carolina had one of its rare scoring threats in the fourth when Tyler Bak led off with a walk for the Gamecocks’ first baserunner of the night against Trip Brown, and went to second on a single to short by Talmadge LeCroy. But a fly ball to left and two to center stranded the two runners.
  • The Bulldogs made it a 3-0 game in the seventh when again with two outs, Stratis delivered. This time with runners on first and second, he singled through the left side to score one run.
  • The Gamecocks’ had another scoring opportunity occurred in the bottom of the seventh. A hit batsman and a walk put runners on first and second with no outs. Ben Brash came out of the bullpen and he induced a pop up to short by KJ Scobey, a pop up to second by Patrick Evans and a fly out to center by Jake Randolph.
  • Gibson came in to pitch the eighth for the Bulldogs and retired the side on two strikeouts and a ground ball to third. In the ninth Gibson singled home a run to make it a 4-0 game. He had a little trouble in the bottom of the ninth giving up a single and a walk with two outs, but he struck out Evans looking to end the game.
  • The Citadel came through in the clutch with five hits with two outs leading two three of its runs, and the Bulldogs were 7-24 with runners on base. South Carolina was 1-10 with runners on and 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
  • Zane Davis, the first reliever of the night for the Bulldogs, earned the win and is 2-1. Gibson picked up his sixth save. USC starter Josh Gunther (2-4) took the loss.
  • The Bulldogs improve to 22-22 and will play Presbyterian in a three game series this weekend with games in Clinton on Friday and Sunday.
  • The Gamecocks fall to 22-24 and will play at LSU this weekend.
