Clemson 7 – USC Upstate 2 Game Summary
- Clemson jumped all over USC Upstate behind Luke Gaffney’s early homer and rode the momentum to a 7-2 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday.
- Gaffney’s third homer in the last four games was a three-run shot that put Clemson on top 3-0 in the bottom of the first.
- After USC Upstate plated a run in the top of the second, the Tigers struck back with three runs in the home half on an RBI single from Tryston McCladdie and a two-run single from Gaffney. Gaffney picked up all five of his RBI in the first two innings.
- The Tigers scored their final run on a bases-loaded walk to Jacob Jarrell in the fourth.
- Talan Bell started the game for Clemson and surrendered a run in two innings before giving way to Justin LeGuernic. LeGuernic (W, 3-1) held Upstate without a hit or a run over the next three innings to pick up the victory.
- Clemson’s bullpen made the early lead stick as six relievers combined to hold the Spartans to just one hit over the final seven innings. The bullpen also accounted for 11 of the Tigers’ 12 strikeouts.
- The Tigers came up with just five hits, but kept the pressure on by drawing eight walks and reaching base on a hit-by-pitch three times.
- The Spartans’ two runs came on an RBI single from Preston Lucas in the second and a wild pitch that plated Johnny Sweeney in the sixth.
- Clemson (26-16) will return to ACC action this weekend with a trip to Louisville for a three-game series. Game 1 between the Tigers and the Cardinals is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday.
