2023 champ Matt Fitzpatrick fired an eight under par 63 on Friday to take a one shot lead at the halfway point of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town. Fitzpatrick, who had 17-under par total in 2023, and won in a playoff, had a bogey free round on Friday and has had only one bogey in the first two days.
He also had some good fortune. His tee shot on the par three 14th hit a tree and nearly rolled into the pond guarding the front of the green. Instead, his ball stopped on the fringe and he rolled in a 33 footer for birdie.
Fitzpatrick has a one shot lead on Viktor Hovland and a two stroke advantage over Harris English. First round leader Ludvig Aberg slipped to a one under 70 and is tied for fourth at minus nine.
Scottie Scheffler remains in the hunt at seven under par after a 67. Wofford’s Andrew Novak had an even par round to remain at six under. Others from the state include Lucas Glover at six under, and Brian Campbell and Jacob Bridgeman at two under.
Defending champion Justin Thomas is last in the 82 player field at plus nine.
Matching the 63 posted by Fitzpatrick was Akshay Batia who is at six under par heading into the weekend.
