Clemson 5 – Virginia 1 Game Summary
- Clemson southpaw Michael Sharman vexed Virginia’s lineup and Nate Savoie homered twice to lead the Tigers to a 5-1 win in Charlottesville, Friday.
- Savoie gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with an opposite-field homer in the top of the third.
- Virginia was finally able to break Sharman’s mastery and tie the game up with an RBI groundout in the home half of the fifth.
- Savoie made sure Sharman’s performance wasn’t wasted, however, continuing his big night at the plate with a two-run homer in the seventh that put the Tigers in front for good.
- Clemson added insurance runs on Bryce Clavon’s RBI single in the seventh and Tryston McCladdie’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
- Savoie’s long balls proved to be more than enough support for Sharman (W, 5-1, 2.70), who scattered six hits and struck out seven over eight innings. Hayden Simmerson threw a perfect ninth on just seven pitches to nail it down for Sharman.
- Luke Gaffney lashed three singles to raise his average to .300 and Savoie (3-5) saw his average climb to .340. The Tigers reached base 20 times with a dozen hits, seven walks and a hit-by-pitch.
- Clemson (25-15, 6-11) and Virginia (27-13, 11-9) will close out the series from Charlottesville, Va., at 1 p.m., Saturday.
