STRecruiting:  South Carolina dealt a second major recruiting loss Friday with Samari Matthews

Samari Matthews

At the end, all the hard work South Carolina put into recruiting CB Samari Matthews (6-1 185) of Cornelius, NC did not pay off with a commitment Friday night. The Gamecocks were unable to overcome Texas as the Longhorns scored a major recruiting victory in the Tar Heel state.

Matthews had been a frequent visitor to USC with at least seven trips over the last two years. He built a very strong relationship with head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray.  But that wasn’t enough.

Matthews cited his relationship with the new cornerbacks coach at Texas as a big reason for choosing Austin over Columbia  as his future home. He had known him from his days at Rutgers.  Matthews said his official visit to Texas sparked his move that way.

The Gamecocks remain with 10 commitments for the 2026 class. They still have another CB prospect on the board in Kosci Barnes who announces later in the month.
