The Clemson rushing game was totally bottled up by the Georgia defense on Saturday to the tune of just 63 net yards by the running backs. The bulk of which came from Phil Mafah, who churned out 59 yards on sixteen carries. Afterwards, Dabo Swinney bemoaned the fact that his team didn’t get enough snaps to help the offense get into rhythm. However, one area where he hopes to get Mafah more opportunities is special teams. The Loganville, Georgia, native had one kickoff return against the Bulldogs for 19 yards.
On Wednesday, Swinney told the media that returning kicks acts like another carry. Adding that, it’s a little easier than a carry because the ball goes straight to the kick returner. Swinney also pointed out that the Tigers have done this in the past, referencing former running back CJ Spiller, who was terrific on special teams.
During his media availability, Swinney also updated the health of his football team and how his players have reacted to the Georgia loss.
