One cornerback spot. That was the only vacancy in the South Carolina secondary going into preseason camp. The departure of Marcellus Dial left Torrian Gray with one starting job to fill. The other corner, his two safeties and his nickel all return. That’s a great luxury for a secondary coach to have.
Add in some highly regarded high school signees and a transfer safety, and Gray can trot out a formidable group, one he’s optimistic will be improved over last season.
The experience of last season should help in 2024. The secondary had their issues allowing 246 passing yards per game and coming up with just eight interceptions (a defensive lineman and a linebacker each had one). Of course, the lack of a strong pass rush didn’t help on the back end, and the Gamecocks are expected to be better in that category.
