Vanderbilt 9-USC 1 Game Summary

  • After taking a 1-0 lead, South Carolina was outscored 9-0 in losing its 10th straight game and program record 32 game of the season. It’s the Gamecocks’ longest losing streak since a 15-game skid in 1961. With the potential for only three more consecutive losses, they will not break that record this season.
  • The Gamecocks scored their lone run in the second on a two-out RBI single by Ethan Lizama.
  • Vanderbilt responded with four runs in the bottom of the second off USC starter Amp Phillips. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. A double drove in two. After another walk and a strikeout, a single scored two more runs for a 4-1 Vandy lead. Phillips was pulled for Brandon Stone.
  • The Commodores doubled their scoring in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Back-to-back RBI singles made it a 6-1 game. Following a walk and a strikeout, another RBI single and a sac fly pushed the lead to 8-1.
  • After giving up two hits and a run in the second, Vandy starter Connor Fennell did not allow a hit until the seventh. The Gamecocks loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of singles. Reliever Alex Kranzler came on and extinguished the threat by striking out Will Craddock and getting Luke Yuhasz to pop up to second.
  • The Commodores added a final run in the seventh while the Gamecocks went down in order in the eighth and stranded a two-out walk in the ninth.
  • The Gamecocks finished with four hits, 11 strikeouts, and they drew two walks. Vandy finished with 14 hits and seven walks. Every Commodore in the lineup had at least one hit.
  • Phillips took the loss to fall to 3-8. Following Stone, Parker Marlatt, and Josh Gunther finished up. The Gamecocks are 22-32 overall and 7-21 in the SEC.
  • The lowest average on record for a USC batting champion is .279 by Andrew Eyster in 2021. After this loss, KJ Scobey and Talmadge LeCroy are the Gamecocks’ leading hitters with a .256 average.
  • Thursday night’s win marked 1,100 for Vandy head coach Tim Corbin in his career. He is six wins away from 1,000 at Vanderbilt. He spent six years as the head coach at Presbyterian before joining Jack Leggett’s staff at Clemson.
