Virginia Tech 2 — Clemson 1 (Game Summary)

  • Virginia Tech scored two runs in the ninth inning to rally for a 2-1 victory over Clemson at English Field on Friday afternoon
  • A crazy bottom of the ninth inning, prevented Clemson from snapping a three-game losing streak. Virginia Tech put its first leadoff batter on base in the 9th when Ethan Ball hit a double off the glove of Jackson Moore at the wall in right field. Ball later scored on Nick Locurto’s single with one out. After Pete Daniel’s infield single, a wild pitch allowed Locurto to advance to third base. Nick Savoie’s throw to second base put Daniel in a rundown. The Tigers retired Daniel, but Locurto raced home to score the walk-off run
  • In what turned out to be an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, the Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Jacob Jarrell singled home Tryston McCladdie with two outs in the inning
  • The score stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth thanks to terrific pitching from both sides. Clemson sent four pitchers to the mound, led by Michael Sharman. Sharman tossed just one inning in a bullpen-session-type start. He was backed up by Drew Titsworth and Ariston Veasey. The trio tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out ten and walking three.
  • For Virginia Tech, two pitchers were enough to get the job done. Logan Eisenreich worked a career-best six innings, striking out a career-high nine Tigers. Ethan Grim worked the last three innings to nab his fourth win of the season
  • The win clinches the series for the Hokies, their first series win over the Tigers since 2009
  • With the loss, the Tigers have now tied a program record for most ACC losses (20) in a single season. The record was set in 2021. It was also the first time this season that Clemson was beaten when holding an opponent to five runs or less. The Tigers were 25-0 in that scenario prior to Friday
  • The two teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1pm in Blacksburg
