The Charleston two-step: #14-Clemson beats The Citadel 9-3 to sweep Lowcountry road trip (AUDIO)

Clemson piled up the runs in the middle innings against The Citadel (Clemson Athletics)

#14-Clemson 9 — The Citadel 3 (Game Summary)

  • Former Clemson and Citadel baseball player Tyler Corbitt threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game on Wednesday night. Last July, Corbitt revealed that he had been diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer. Corbitt wasn’t the only Clemson/Citadel connection at the game, as current Citadel head coach Russell Triplett was a Tiger infielder who hit 11 homers and recorded 98 RBIs during his career at Clemson from 2001 to 2004
  • Wednesday’s game marked the first time Clemson had played at The Citadel in just over a decade. The Tigers picked up a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs at Riley Park on March 16th of 2016 behind a pair of hits and two runs scored by Seth Beer
  • The middle innings were awfully good to the Tigers as Clemson scored all of its runs in the fourth (3), fifth (4), and sixth (2) innings
  • Jacob Jarrell got the Tigers on the board first with his 9th HR of the season to tie Nate Savoie for the team lead. His at-bat was initially ruled a double as the ball bounced off the wall in right center field. However, the umpires came together and determined that the ball actually connected with the pitch clock beyond the field of play, resulting in a home run. Television replays appeared to show that the umpires got the call correct, opening up a big inning for the Tigers. Clemson added a run on an RBI single by Tyler Lichtenberger and a bases-loaded walk to Savoie, which gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead
  • The Citadel got right back in the game in the bottom of the fourth and could have actually taken the lead. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs and scored on a ground ball to second, but Jarren Purify was able to turn a double play for Clemson to help limit the damage. The Citadel got one more run across on an RBI single by Garrett Fulmer to make it a 3-2 game heading to the fifth
  • The missed opportunity for a much more productive inning immediately came back to haunt The Citadel as the visitors from the Upstate tacked on four runs in the top of the fifth to open up a 7-2 advantage. The big blow in the frame was a 2-run triple from Lichtenberger, his second hit of the game and the first three-bagger for the Tigers this season. Lichtenberger finished with three hits and a career-high 5 RBIs
  • The Citadel recorded its final run in the bottom of the 7th on a RBI groundout from Carson Hodges
  • 7 pitchers appeared in the game for the Tigers, while The Citadel countered with just four
  • Clemson (18-4) travels to Notre Dame for a three-game ACC series starting on Friday. Meantime, the Bulldogs (8-11) will play their SoCon opener this weekend at Mercer
