Walhalla 70 – Keenan 58
by Chris Dearing
- Ashlyn Frick scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead three players in double figures in leading Walhalla to its second straight Class 3A girls state championship with a 70-58 victory over Keenan Friday afternoon.
- The Razorbacks have back-to-back state titles after not winning a state championship since 1952.
- “It feels good. We worked hard and I’m proud of the girls and how they’ve brought the effort to every game,” Walhalla coach Byron Wimphrie said. “I don’t think the girls have celebrated after any game. They’ve been mission focused and it’s good to finally see them celebrate.”
- It was a dominant offensive performance for Walhalla (27-2). They led 21-15 after one quarter and took command in the second quarter and never trailed after it was 8-6 in the first quarter. The big run was a 22-7 run that gave the Razorbacks a 36-19 lead with 3:00 remaining in the first half.
- Baylee Cannon scored 19 points and Kami Roach chipped in with 12 points with Miley White contributing eight points and 12 rebounds.
- Daniel was the only team to defeat Walhalla during the season. The Razorbacks had two victories over Class 2A state champion Landrum.
- Taelor Lee-Sutton scored 20 points for Keenan, who was making the 10th state championship game appearance under coach Reggie McLain, who has six titles to his credit. Kristin Brown added 14 points and Aareonna Caughman chipped in 13 points. The Raiders (20-8) forced 16 turnovers but couldn’t turn those into points.
