Georgia 87 – South Carolina 68 Game Summary

  • South Carolina fell behind by double digits early and never fully recovered in an 87-68 loss to Georgia in Athens, Saturday.
  • The setback is the Gamecocks’ eighth in the last nine games.
  • The Bulldogs made seven of their first eight shots in running out to a 19-9 lead in the opening minutes.
  • USC’s defense struggled to get Georgia out of its rhythm as the Dawgs shot 61% in the first half and 56% for the game.
  • South Carolina fought back in the second half, cutting the deficit to six on Eli Ellis’ 3-pointer with under 12 minutes to play. Georgia countered with a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 16 and end the threat.
  • The Bulldogs attacked from the inside and the outside, outscoring the Gamecocks 40-28 in the paint and 36-18 from the 3-point line.
  • After their second-half run was halted, USC seemingly ran out of gas, missing 10 of its last 13 shots from the field.
  • Due to Georgia’s highly efficient offense, the Gamecocks were unable to get out in transition and were outscored 22-2 in fast break points.
  • Only two of South Carolina’s starters, Meechie Johnson (20 points) and Kobe Knox (12), finished in double figures. Freshman Eli Ellis led the reserves with 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting.
  • South Carolina (12-17, 3-13) will next play host to Tennessee in the home finale. Tipoff between the Gamecocks and the Volunteers is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday.
