Army 9 — South Carolina 5 (Game Summary)
- Today’s game was the first of the “Salute the Troops” round-robin weekend in Columbia. Navy and Air Force are scheduled to play on Friday night.
- Army’s first-ever matchup with the Gamecocks went about as well as they could have hoped. The Black Knights scored 9 runs on 9 hits and played errorless baseball.
- Army took control with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, the visitors scored on a wild pitch and RBI single. In the fourth, second baseman Chris Barr homered to right field to give Army a 4-0 lead
- Carolina answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Logan Sutter roped a double into right field to cut the lead to 4-1
- Army seemingly put the game away in the seventh with four runs on three hits. The big blows in the frame were an RBI double from Addison Ainsworth and a 3-run home run from DH Josiah Overbeek to push the advantage to 8-1
- Barr added to the tally with his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the 8th to make it 9-1
- However, the Gamecocks made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth. Will Craddock singled in a run before Patrick Evans drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-3 Army. Sutter followed Evans’ walk with one of his own to cut the lead to 9-4. However, Overbeek moved to the mound and struck out Tyler Bak with the bases loaded to end the threat.
- Carolina got a two-out home run from Talmadge LeCroy in the bottom of the 9th for the final tally of 9-5
- USC stranded nine men and hit .091 (1-of-11) with runners in scoring position
- The Gamecocks (4-2) will host Navy on Saturday at 1pm
