South Carolina 8 – Wofford 2 Game Summary

  • KJ Scobey rapped out four hits and four Gamecocks pitchers combined to limit Wofford to six hits in an 8-2 victory in Spartanburg, Tuesday.
  • USC and Wofford were meeting for the first time since 2017 and Tuesday’s game marked the first time the Gamecocks played at Fifth Third Park, home of the Hub City Spartanburgers.
  • Wofford got off to a good start as righthander Champ Davis retired the Gamecocks in order ahead of Cade Collins’ long ball in the bottom of the first inning to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.
  • USC starter Connor Chicoli (1-0) settled in after the leadoff homer, however, scattering five hits and fanning four to pick up his first win with the Gamecocks.
  • The lineup put Chicoli in line for the win with a two-run fourth inning. Tyler Bak, Jack Reynolds, Aaron Jamison and Scobey all had singles as part of the rally.
  • South Carolina capitalized on a trio of Wofford errors, scoring an unearned run in the third and two more in the seventh.
  • Extra-base hits were hard to come by. Collins’ first-inning home run was the only extra-base hit yielded by either staff until Talmadge LeCroy (2-5) and Scobey (4-5, 3 RBI) both went deep in the ninth. LeCroy and Scobey each homered on the first pitch of the at-bat.
  • Scobey (.444) homered in the ninth inning for the second time in four games after providing a walk-off winner against Northern Kentucky, Friday.
  • Righthanded relievers Elijah Foster (Sacred Heart) and Cooper Parks each tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Chicoli before yielding to southpaw Logan Prisco (Florence-Darlington) for the final two frames. Prisco surrendered a run in the eighth before pitching a perfect ninth to close out the victory.
  • The Terriers scored 35 runs in their season-opening sweep of Mercyhurst, but couldn’t string together hits against the USC staff, Tuesday.
  • Gamecocks transfer Jack Reynolds (Gulf Coast) was 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in his first start at second base.
  • Wofford (3-1) will next play host to Valparaiso at 5:30 p.m., Friday. USC (3-1), meanwhile, faces a quick turnaround and will host Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m., Wednesday.
