STRecruiting: 2027 WR Trey Wimbley of Daniel the latest Lion to feel the love from Clemson with an offer

Trey Wimbley

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has tapped back into his pipeline at Daniel High School with an offer to 2027 WR Trey Wimbley (6-1 175). Wimbley picked up the offer from Swinney on Friday while he was there for a visit and then announced he would be reclassifying from the 2028 class to 2027.

“It meant a lot.  I’ve always been coming to Clemson games, and it just hit hard when I heard I got that offer.  It just meant the world to me,” Wimbley said.  “He just told me how good of a player I am, and he just told me I have an offer to come play at Clemson.  He’d love for me to play on his team. They like my top-end speed and how I can break away from players/ They said I have great ball skills and natural ability.”

Besides being a star at nearby Daniel, Wimbley has a deep connection to Swinney and Clemson. His father, Prince Wimbley, was Swinney’s roommate at Alabama. In fact, he played receiver and had 63 catches with a touchdown in his career. That’s compared to Swinney’s seven catches and no touchdowns.

The Wimbleys lived in Birmingham, where Trey attended Briarwood Christian, the same school as Clemson backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina. His dad moved the family to the Upstate a couple of years ago when he joined the athletic department as the Development and Community Outreach Coordinator.

This, however, is not the case of Swinney rewarding the son of a close friend with a scholarship offer. Wimbley is emerging as a major prospect on his own merit, with other offers from Ole Miss and SMU. Plus, Georgia and Tennessee have also been in touch. But the Tigers clearly have the home-field advantage here

“Their environment is great.  I love going down there to  Death Valley,” he said.  “Every time I go there, it’s just a great experience.  Their offense is great.  They always like to throw the ball.  When I was on a visit there, I was playing the NCAA game on the PlayStation, and Coach (Garrett) Riley was like, You’ve got to throw the ball every single time.  He wouldn’t let me run the ball in the game, so I thought that was pretty funny.”

Wimibley said at this point he doesn’t have a real favorite, and he doesn’t have a timeline for a decision.

“I haven’t made that decision yet, but Clemson is definitely up on the list,” Wimbley said.  “I like SMU a lot.  Tennessee hasn’t offered yet, but they are showing a lot of interest.”

This season, Wimbley had 57 catches for 1072 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a sophomore, he had 28 catches for 583 yards and eight touchdowns.

Wimbley also stars on the track and runs the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the 4X100 meter relay. He said his 40 time is in the 4.4-second range.
