Upstate 6 — Clemson 3 (Game Summary)
- The 16th meeting between the Clemson and Upstate did not mirror the 15th between the two. Just three weeks ago, Luke Gaffney drove in five runs as the Tigers defeated the Spartans 7-2 in Clemson. In the rematch on Tuesday, Maloy Heaghney delivered a pair of doubles, while a quintet of Upstate pitchers limited Clemson to just three runs on eight hits as the Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak to the Tigers
- Tuesday’s game marked the first time Clemson has taken the field at Fifth Third Park, home of the High-A minor league Hub City Spartanburgers
- Early on, it appeared as if Clemson had shaken off the weekend against Florida State. After Nate Savoie and Jacob Jarrell each drew one-out walks, Tryston McCladdie came through with an RBI double to plate Savoie and give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage in the first. A lead that was short-lived
- Johnny Sweeney delivered Upstate’s first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to even the contest at a run apiece. But the Spartans were just getting started
- In the second inning, Upstate effectively secured the game by plating four runs on four hits. The scoring started with runners on the corners and one out as Alex Ritzer bunted for a base hit and an RBI to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Henry Zenor followed with a single to right before Heaghney doubled in a run to make it 4-1 Upstate. Tyler Lang drove in the final run of the frame on a sac fly to right center, upping the Spartans’ advantage to 5-1 after two
- That was plenty of cushion for Upstate, as the Tigers could scratch across just a single run in the fifth and one more in the ninth
- Upstate improved to 26-27 overall and will wrap up the regular season with non-conference games against Elon and Northern Kentucky this weekend. Meanwhile, Clemson (30-23) will visit Virginia Tech for a three-game series starting Thursday to cap off ACC play
