STRecruiting: Gamecock WBB loses MiLaysia Fulwiley to the transfer portal

Fulwiley scored 23 points in Carolina’s 71-67 “Sweet 16” win over Maryland in the NCAA Tournament

It’s been an interesting week for South Carolina women’s basketball. On Sunday, the Gamecocks fell to UConn in the title game, ending their bid for a second consecutive national championship. On Tuesday, the outlook improved with the announcement that guard Raven Johnson would be returning for another season with the Gamecocks. That was coupled with the news that Florida State transfer Ta’Niya Latson would bring her 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game average to Columbia.

On Friday, the roller coaster took another dip.

Lulu Kesin of the Greenville News was the first to report that guard MiLaysia Fulwiley will enter the transfer portal. The dynamic sophomore from Keenan High School in Columbia was critical in USC’s run to the national championship game this season. She bailed out the Gamecocks with eleven fourth quarter points in their come-from-behind win over Maryland in the “Sweet 16.” For the season, she was the Gamecocks’ second leading scorer, averaging twelve points a game off the bench.

Fulwiley, who started just three games in her two years with the Gamecocks, presumably finishes her career at USC having amassed 904 points, 159 assists, and 123 steals. A year ago, she was the named to the SEC’s All Freshman Team, while earning SEC tournament “Most Valuable Player” honors.

The transfer portal opened March 25 and closes April 22, however a player in the portal can still withdraw and return to the team after the closing date.
