CHARLOTTE: Year three for Tony Elliott at Virginia cannot kick off soon enough. As a rookie head coach in 2022, he had to deal with the unfathomable…the shooting deaths of three of his players by a former player. That would shake any program to its core, much less one in transition to a new coach. The Cavaliers finished that first season with Elliott at 3-7 cancelling their final two games. Last season, still dealing with the aftereffects of the tragedy, they were 3-9 though they were more competitive than the record indicates. Now, Elliott feels the foundation has been laid and he’s ready to coach a Virginia team that is ready to play the way he imagined when hired.
