South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has already nabbed a commitment from one of the top running backs in the Transfer Portal in Rocket Sanders. He now apparently has the chance to do the same at the quarterback position.
Late Friday night, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported Texas transfer Maalik Murphy (6-5 245) would make USC one of three stops this weekend before the dead period starts Monday. Thamel did not have specific dates for the visit, only that Murphy was to visit Duke, USC and Oregon State in the coming days. Thamel interviewed Murphy earlier in the week for an ESPN story shortly after he entered the Portal.
Earlier in the day Friday, On3 reported Murphy was to visit Duke on Friday, Baylor on Saturday and Oregon State on Sunday.
Murphy was a backup quarterback at Texas playing behind Quinn Ewers. He did start a pair of games when Ewers was sidelined by an injury. On the season he passed for 477 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Murphy is a native of Gardenia, CA. Some of his other offers out of high school in 2022 were Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Florida, Baylor, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio State, UCLA, Southern Cal and Texas A&M.
Because of his size and arm strength, Murphy is considered to be a strong candidate for the NFL Draft which he will be eligible for in the spring of 2025. He does have three years of eligiblilty remaining.
