STRecruiting: Byrnes RB Tre Segarra is hopping on the Lane Train with a commitment to LSU

Byrnes RB Tre Segarra (5-10 205) made one visit to LSU during his recruitment, and that was all he needed to realize Lane Kiffin and Baton Rouge were right for him. Segarra, one of the nation’s top running back prospects, announced a commitment to the Tigers Tuesday morning over South Carolina, Indiana, Stanford, and Tennessee.

This was a significant recruiting loss for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks, who have seen their recruiting results sputter so far this summer. The Gamecocks were considered strong favorites for Segarra through much of his recruitment, but he canceled his official visits for there and Tennessee after visiting LSU the weekend of June 5th.

“LSU hadn’t been recruiting me the longest, but when I got on campus and met Coach (Kevin) Smith (RB coach) and Coach Kiffin, it was the people in the area, and I was like, this is what I want to be a part of and the culture that I want to help to build,” Segarra said during his announcement. “I was on campus when I told them (of the commitment). We were in the stadium, so it was exciting.”

Last month, when asked about what Segarra was looking for in his future college, Byrnes coach Reggie Shaw said his star back was a big-picture kind of guy.

“I think he’s going to make a forty-year decision,” Shaw said. “He has a plan of possibly commercial real estate, or something in business, so he wants to be in a program that’s going to prepare him for life after football. But he also wants to be coached and developed, to have an opportunity to play in the NFL, because he has that kind of talent. He’s looking for the total package, but also a good fit. He’s got a lot of criteria. Monetarily, I don’t think that’s a big priority as much as those first two that I mentioned.”

Segarra, who is also a standout soccer player, said he will not attempt to play both sports in college.

In his career, Segarra has rushed for 2834 yards and 29 touchdowns. He rushed for 1460 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.
