Coastal Carolina jumped on Clemson pitching for ten runs in the first inning and never let the Tigers in the game in a 16-7-win Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Chants built a 15-0 lead after three at-bats and went on to their first road win of the season and their 11th win in 58 games against Clemson.
The Chants batted .350 for the game with 14 hits and were 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position. The first inning was their first ten-run inning since 2018. The big blow in the inning was a three-run homer by DH Tyler Johnson. In a five-run third inning, Johnson delivered again with a two-run homer.
The Tigers clubbed five homers to account for their seven runs, and ordinarily that would be a big story. But all of those long balls came after they were down 15-0 and weren’t nearly enough. Dylan Brewer had two of the long balls, and the Tigers also got homers from Max Wagner, Benjamin Blackwell and Cooper Ingle.
Elliott Carney started for CCU and pitched into the fifth. He was lifted for Matt Joyce (4-0) who picked up the win. Billy Barlow (0-2) started for Clemson and did not record an out while allowing five earned runs.
Coastal Carolina is 12-7-1 and heads to Texas State for a Sun Belt Conference series this weekend. Clemson falls to 15-5 with their fifth loss in six games. The Tigers will host Winthrop Wednesday at 6:00 PM.
