Clemson fell behind early and couldn’t overcome USC Upstate’s offensive barrage in a 12-2 loss at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday. The Spartans plated five runs in the second inning, all charged to freshman southpaw Caden Grice (0-1), and the Tigers never recovered. Grice tried to cut into the deficit from the batter’s box, going 2 for 3 with a run scored, but it was not nearly enough as USC Upstate piled on with another five spot in the ninth.
USC Upstate (10-0) first baseman Jack Gallagher drove in seven runs on three hits, including a grand slam in the top of the ninth. The Tigers lineup collected nine hits and four walks but couldn’t produce a significant rally.
Clemson (5-5, 1-2) will next travel to Chapel Hill for a three-game set against North Carolina beginning at 6 p.m., Friday.
