OL Miller Westerfield (6-7 295) of Roswell, GA, is another one of those big-boy road-graters who’s attracted the attention of South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and offensive line coach Randy Clements. Beamer personally reached out to Westerfield with an offer in February, and Clements and recruiting assistant Sam Serbay have followed up with the recruiting blitz, including a recent school visit by Clements.
Westerfield made an unofficial visit to USC in April, and he had marked down the Gamecocks for his first official visit the opening weekend of June. That visit is now off, but it wasn’t by Westerfield’s choice.
“I’m a little disappointed because I got my official visit dates cut short,” Westerfield said. “We’re taking a vacation that first week that it’s open. I’m only able to take three visits right now, and I’m trying to get dates set up outside of the month of June. South Carolina was going to be that first weekend, but I didn’t know I was going to be out of the state. I loved my unofficial, and I wanted to get up to see them one more time.”
Westerfield said Clements and the recruiting staff are still working on a date for him that might work.
“They’re not sure yet either,” he said. “They’re still trying to see if we can work one more thing out.”
Westerfield wants that visit to take place because the Gamecocks are serious contenders, and he wants to give them one final review.
“I loved what I saw in the practice, and I liked the community up there when I saw it,” Westerfield said. “I went in there and saw their nutrition aspect of things. I had a good talk with their strength coach. He gave me a good rundown on how he likes to run it. It’s a good place. I like Columbia. I’d like to see it again so I can really make up my mind. I’m still open-minded. I’ve seen a few practices, but I’d like to be able to really put it together to see what really feels right.”
Westerfield said he has plans to visit Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee in June. Those three, along with USC, constitute his final four. He’s looking at mid to late July for a decision.
