STRecruiting: Clemson is hoping to mine the Metroplex in search of its next great quarterback

Trey Wright

Clemson’s 2028 pursuit at quarterback continues. Earlier this month, the Tigers hosted Trey Wright (5-11, 165) of Frisco (TX) Lone Star, who has been rapidly rising as a national prospect. In what served as an introductory visit to Clemson, it is safe to say Wright left the Upstate with a strong impression.

“This was actually my first time visiting campus,” Wright said. “What stood out right away was how nice everything is. It’s easily one of the best campuses I’ve seen so far. From the stadium to the facilities, they really have everything you could ask for.”

Clemson reached out after his sophomore season, where he was the unanimous District 5-5A MVP after throwing for over 4,000 yards with 43 passing touchdowns. Chad Morris was the first to initiate his recruitment, closely followed by Tajh Boyd as a visit began to take shape behind the scenes.

The Tigers won’t be offering anyone in the 2028 class until this summer, but the personal visit this spring is a hopeful sign of Wright’s interest. Especially considering he’s already being courted by the likes of SMU, Baylor, Missouri, and TCU, among others.

Wright, a dual-sport star in football and basketball, toured both Death Valley and Littlejohn Coliseum. But he spent most of the day on the football side, and the highlight was time with Morris and Boyd.

What took him by surprise was that the two coaches went through his game tape, providing Wright with analysis and an opportunity to see how Clemson perceives his game. Morris’ direct and honest approach leads the Texas prospect to believe he could truly develop under the Tigers’ system.

“What really stood out to me was how intentional they were with their time, especially considering it was a holiday weekend,” he explained. “While we were watching film, they were actually coaching me. We broke down my game film, teaching me new things, and helping me see the field from a different perspective. That meant a lot and really showed how invested they are in building a relationship.”

The sophomore plans to return to campus later this year, presumably for Dabo Swinney’s high school camp in June.

“I definitely plan to get back to campus this summer,” Wright said. “Clemson is definitely standing out, but it’s still so early, only being a sophomore; we’ll see what God has planned for my future!”
