FOUNDERS PARK
- Former USC head coach Chad Holbrook coached in his first game at Founders Park since being fired as the Gamecocks’ head coach following the 2017 season. The win was just the 10th victory all-time for the Cougars in the series with USC. Holbrook is now 2-1 against the Gamecocks.
- Charleston loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the first against Gamecock starter Logan Prisco, but only scored one run on a fielder’s choice. Parker Marlatt replaced Prisco to get the final two outs.
- The Cougars added to their lead in the with a three run homer by Alex LaCoste, who had four RBIs on the night.
- The Gamecocks loaded the bases with two outs in the third against Cougar starter Austin Wiegandt, but he struck out Talmadge LeCroy to end that threat.
- Wiegandt took a one hit shutout into the fifth. He hit leadoff batter Will Craddock and was relived by Alex Lyon. The Gamecocks eventually loaded the bases and got one run home on a sac fly by Jake Randolph to make it a 4-1 game. LeCroy grounded out to short to leave two more on base. He stranded six of the Gamecocks’ twelve that were left on base for the game.
- USC cut the lead in half with a two-out double by Craddock that scored Luke Yuhasz from first, and then tied the game in the seventh on a two run homer by Tyler Bak. The Gamecocks went on to load the bases with two outs, but Craddock fouled out to the second baseman to end the inning.
- The game went to the ninth tied 4-4. Alex Philpott got the first two outs in the top of the ninth, then a pair of singles followed by a Ethan Plyer double scored two runs for a 6-4 Cougar lead.
- The Gamecocks threatened in the bottom of the ninth putting runners on first and second with two outs. Ryan Hinch (1-0) was able to strike out pinch-hitter Ethan Lizama on a 3-2 pitch to end the game and earn his first win of the season. Philpott took the loss to fall to 0-3.
- South Carolina has lost three straight and is 15-19. The Gamecocks open a series at Missouri on Thursday night. Charleston has won two straight and is 13-19. The Cougars will host North Carolina A&T this weekend.
