STRecruiting: Double the visits, double the fun for Clemson 2027 target SAF Keland Shelton of Charlotte

Keland Shelton, Jr.

If once is good, then twice has to be better. At least that appears to be the thinking for 2027 safety Keland Shelton, Jr. (6-1, 190) of Providence High School in Charlotte as he was planning his visits to Clemson. He expects to be on campus this weekend for “Junior Day” on Saturday, followed by a return visit for the spring game on March 28th.

For Shelton, Clemson’s initial pursuit came as somewhat of a surprise, but it was certainly a welcome one.

Defensive pass game coordinator Thomas Allen has led the recruiting push since January, which has already yielded a positive relationship. Allen’s demeanor has resonated with Shelton in a unique way, which is a major reason why Clemson ranks so highly in his mind.

“You know, he’s a guy that I think I want to get to know more about, for sure,” Shelton said. “He did a home visit on me a couple of weeks ago. What he was telling me seemed straight up, you know, no bull behind what he’s saying. He’s a pretty stern guy, so definitely someone I’d love to be coached under.”

Shelton is eager to take multiple visits to Clemson because it will allow him to gather as much information as possible, including seeing the coaching staff in action and how the program operates behind closed doors.

“I’m really looking forward to the message that is being preached at Clemson,” he confessed. “I really feel like I don’t know too much about the university, so I definitely look forward to learning more about the things that they have going on there outside of football, definitely. I look forward to seeing what the culture is like there, which is why I picked the spring practice and the scrimmage dates, because I feel like if I’m not watching the coaches live, then I’m not really getting the full experience of what the university is about.”

The defender considers himself a hybrid safety, one who can make an impact in the box while rolling out in coverage and disrupting big plays. And that skill set has attracted numerous suitors around the country. He currently holds offers from the likes of Wake Forest, Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, NC State, Tennessee, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, and reigning national champion Indiana.

He has set a pair of official visits to ACC teams, Wake Forest on May 29th, and Virginia the following weekend.

For Shelton, the process with Clemson comes down to receiving an offer, which won’t come until after he visits campus in March. Still, when that moment comes, it will be a joyous occasion for the junior prospect.

“For me, Clemson would definitely be a blessing, just as any other school, for sure,” Shelton said. “Schools that are standing out right now are Tennessee, UVA, Wake Forest, and Missouri, just jumped into the mix. I have good long-term connections over there, so definitely look forward to traveling to see them, for sure.”

Last season, Shelton had 89 tackles with 11.5 tackles for loss, and he defended 15 pass attempts.
