A Manning may have attracted the eyeballs, but evidently it’s Sellers that stirs the imagination. Despite all of the conversation around Texas and its QB Arch Manning, SEC media members selected South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers first team All-SEC in the poll, which was released on Friday. LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier was on the second team, with Manning landing on the third squad. The redshirt sophomore from Florence is the first Gamecock quarterback to ever been named preseason first team All-SEC.
USC also had a first-team member on the other side of the ball, with defensive lineman Dylan Stewart earning the nod following a breakout freshman season. Defensive back Jalon Kilgore was named to the All-SEC second team.
While Manning missed out on the top individual honor, his team was selected first in the preseason poll, followed by Georgia, Alabama, and LSU. South Carolina, which finished in a six-way tie for fourth place last season, was tabbed fifth in this year’s preseason outlook. Only 10 times since 1992 (33 years) has the predicted champion prior to the season at SEC Media Days proceeded to win the SEC Championship Game.
The Gamecocks open the new season on August 31st in Atlanta versus Virginia Tech.
