Triston Lewis (6-4 205) is a standout athlete at Greenwood High School who plays quarterback on the football team. He’s also on the basketball and baseball squads. Thursday, he joined his travel baseball team in Atlanta. But earlier in the afternoon, ,he hit a recruiting home run with an offer from and a commitment to South Carolina.
“I’ve wanted to South Carolina since I went to the game versus Wofford, with the fan base and the energy that South Carolina has, and especially with it being in state,” Lewis said. “Actually, I was on the baseball field when Coach Beamer called me. Ii had just finished batting practice. That was real exciting. It’s just a great opportunity. Really, just ready to go up there and show what I can do.”
Lewis gained the attention of USC head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Torrian Gray with his performance in a seven on seven at USC in June. He followed up that performance with another strong showing in camp the next day.
“We went up there for seven on seven and I spoke with Coach Gray right before we started playing,” Lewis said. “I actually caught two picks up there while I was playing safety. I handled business at the camp. I did what I needed to do, and we are here now.”
Lewis will play in the secondary for the Eagles this season, as well as quarterback. Last season he passed for 1657 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and rushed for 1027 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Lewis gives the Gamecocks their second commitment in as many days and 12 for the recruiting campaign. He’s the second safety in the class and the sixth from South Carolina.
The Gamecocks are expected to add commitment #13 on Friday when quarterback Landon Duckworth of Jackson, AL makes his commitment announcement.
