HILTON HEAD: Justin Thomas has been winless on the PGA Tour since the 2022 season. He took a big step toward ending that streak with a course-record matching 10-under 61 Thursday in the opening round of the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island.
Thomas recorded 11 birdies and only one bogey. Thomas hit 16 of 18 greens and had six birdie putts within ten feet. But he was also dialed in from deep with three birdie putts from 35-feet or more.
The 61 is the sixth straight round in the 60s in the RBC Heritage by Thomas who finished T5 last year at -14. He could have gone lower had he made a short par put on #10 and a short birdie putt on #18.
Thursday’s 61 was not the lowest round of Thomas’ career. He recorded a 59 in the first round of the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley are tied for second at seven under par. Wyndham Clark sits along in fourth at minus six.
Brian Campbell, a resident of Bluffton, leads the state contingent at five under par. Lucas Glover and Andrew Novak are at three under, and Jacob Bridgeman finished round one at even par 71.
