Russell Triplett possesses a very potent one-two baseball punch. He was a tremendous player as a shortstop at Clemson before turning his talents on the minor leagues as part of the New York Mets organization. Following his playing days, Triplett traded his glove for a fungo and began climbing the coaching tree. It was this trek that ultimately led him to Newberry College, where he coached the Wolves to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division Two national tournament. Now, Newberry’s all-time winningest coach (418 wins) is hoping his magic touch will translate to The Citadel.
The West Columbia native was named the next head coach of the Bulldogs on Wednesday, replacing Tony Skole, who was let go at the end of this past season. Triplett will be formerly introduced by The Citadel at a press conference on Monday afternoon in Charleston.
Beforehand, Triplett dropped by SportsTalk on Thursday night to discuss his successful tenure at Newberry College and what he hopes to bring to the baseball fans in the Lowcountry.
