After a tough 0-11 season in 2023, Coach Maurice Drayton of The Citadel is ready for a big comeback. Speaking from a Citadel Club meeting in Chester Wednesday night, he expressed optimism for the upcoming season, highlighting the recruitment of 42 new prospects from 11 different states, including key areas in the Midwest. Drayton believes this diverse talent pool is crucial for building a strong and competitive team that can face top programs successfully.
Drayton acknowledged last season’s difficulties but emphasized the lessons learned. Despite the losses, giving significant playing time to freshmen was part of his strategy to develop their skills quickly. His goal is to turn these young players into experienced competitors, ready to take on more seasoned teams. This transformation, he says, is essential for the team’s improvement and future success.
A major boost for the team comes from the addition of transfer quarterback Jonathan Bennett from Liberty. Bennett’s experience and leadership are already making a positive impact. Drayton also mentioned backup quarterback Dustin Fletcher from Northern Illinois, stressing the importance of having strong players in key positions to enhance the team’s overall performance.
Even with the challenges of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) at a smaller, military-focused school like The Citadel, Drayton remains hopeful. He highlighted local businesses in Charleston eager to support disciplined and hardworking athletes. By building strong community relationships, Drayton aims to navigate the complexities of college athletics while upholding the school’s values. This balanced approach is designed to guide The Citadel toward long-term success.
