Head coach Bob Richey and Furman players Mike Bothwell and JP Pegues held a press conference, Friday, as they continue to prepare for a second-round matchup with 18th-ranked San Diego State.
Not only did Thursday’s upset over Virginia propel Furman past the opening round for the second time in program history, but the Paladins also set the record for single-season victories by picking up win no. 28 in the process.
Bothwell (11 points) led the Southern Conference in scoring this season and registered his 2,000th career point, Thursday. Pegues, of course, knocked down the game-winning shot that will long be remembered by Paladins fans, lifting Furman to its 68-67 victory and into the second round for the first time since 1974.
San Diego State advanced to the second round by virtue of a 63-57 victory over the College of Charleston, Thursday. The 5th-seeded Aztecs and 13th-seeded Paladins collide in Orlando at 12:10 p.m., Saturday. The winner will advance to the Sweet Sixteen to meet the winner of the Alabama-Maryland game.
