NC State right fielder Noah Soles had three hits and four RBIs as the Wolfpack evened up its ACC series versus Clemson with a 5-2 win over the Tigers on Saturday. The Wolfpack improved to 17-9 overall and 5-5 in the ACC, while the Tigers dropped to 18-8 overall and 2-5 in the league. The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon at 1pm at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Clemson picked up where it left off in the series opener on Friday (14-3 win) by scoring a run in the first inning on a Max Wagner RBI double. But it was Clemson’s inability to capitalize in the fifth inning that will lead to a sleepless night for the Tigers.
Trailing 3-2, Clemson loaded the bases on a walk, base hit, and a perfectly executed bunt single by Cooper Ingle. However, NC State reliever Canaan Silver was able to get out of the jam by striking out Wagner, Bryar Hawkins, and then inducing a line out from Tyler Corbitt to retire the side. The Wolfpack would take that momentum into the sixth inning and put the game away on a 2-run single by Soles to up the advantage to 5-2.
Silver notched his third win of the year, yielding no runs on just three hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Chris Villaman tossed the final two innings to record his fifth save of the year. Tiger starter Nick Hoffmann (3-3) suffered the loss, as he allowed three runs on six hits in four innings of work.
