#STRecruiting: Burgess to work around the 4th for his announcement

Derwin Burgess could become the Gamecocks’ 3rd receiver commitment

WR Derwin Burgess (5-11 177) of Riverdale, GA said Tuesday night he thinks he’s made his decision from a final six of USC, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida State and Coastal Carolina. He said he’s not yet informed the school of his commitment. He said he’ll do that around the time he goes public and that will be either July 3rd or July 5th.

USC has been on Burgess for an extended period dating back to win Bryan McClendon was the receivers coach. The Gamecocks’ new receivers coach Joe Cox picked up the recruiting of Burgess and has advanced his team’s cause.

“Since coach Bryan McClendon left, me and coach (Joe) Cox have gotten really close,” Burgess said. “He’s funny and he’s more familiar with the playbook.  He has me watching film a lot.  They are like I’m the next Deebo (Samuel), that’s what they tell me.  They say they need me.”

Burgess said he’s also talking with the recruiters from the other schools on a regular basis. That includes Coastal Carolina receivers coach Tony Washington.

“Coach Washington has really been down to Earth in telling me everything, not just what I want to hear but the truth,” Burgess said.  “I’m impressed with how far they have come from where they were to where they are now.  That was a big transition.”

Burgess said his commitment announcement will be a simple Tweet. According to MaxPreps, last season Burgess had 28 catches for 463 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s rated a 3-star prospect and the #98 recruit in Georgia for 2021 by the 247Sports Composite.
