Sam Weatherly aced Stony Brook with a 14-strikeout performance in Clemson’s 2-0 win over the SeaWolves at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Friday. Weatherly gave up just two hits and a walk in six innings of work. The Tigers bullpen came in and finished what Weatherly started by shutting out Stony Brook over the final three frames, culminating in Carson Spiers’ third save.
Weatherly (1-0) was in command from the outset and lowered his ERA to 0.56 after two starts. Spiers has been near perfect in the closer role, surrendering no runs and just a pair of hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Clemson’s lineup didn’t mount much offense against Stony Brook, but did squeeze out two runs against starter Jared Milch. Mac Starbuck scored on a 1st inning double play and Sam Hall tripled home Dylan Brewer in the second. The Tigers are averaging just 3.4 runs/game, but it’s been enough to carry the club to a 5-0 start.
The series continues with Game 2 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, 3 p.m., Saturday. RHP Davis Sharpe (1-0, 0.00) is slated to make his second start.
