South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and quarterbacks coach Kendal Briles have dished out a handful of offers to 2027 quarterbacks with a plan to take one in the class. That one could be accounted for by the end of the Easter Weekend, as Jerry Meyer III (6-0 170) of Waxahachie, TX, is ready to make his college commitment.
“I’ve been on pretty much every visit that I needed to be on over the past month or so,” Meyer said Thursday night. “I revisited those top handful of schools, and I’m looking to make the decision here pretty soon. I would say South Carolina and Houston are kind of like my top two. I wouldn’t be surprised if an announcement happens here pretty much this weekend.”
Meyer has had a long recruiting relationship with Briles dating back to his days as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at TCU. Briles was able to get a commitment from Meyer to become a Horned Frog last October (he decommitted in February), and now he’s zeroing in on one for the Gamecocks.
“I went up there about a week or so ago, and I was in communication with them prior to that, and pretty much every day after that,” Meyer said. “Really good relationship establishing there, and got a great relationship with Coach Briles. They’ve reached out pretty much every day since then. They’re going to sign only one (quarterback).”
And that might very well be Meyer.
“Definitely leaning to South Carolina for sure,” Meyer said. “It’s because of the relationship that’s been built between me and Coach Briles, and us having that foundation already. You just add in the coaches they have there and what they are building. I think it’s something special. And Coach Beamer, that guy is a guy you want to play for. I think he has two very good sides to himself, a loving side, a pat you on the back side, but also a real serious coaching side, and he’ll get on you and coach you hard. He’s definitely a guy you want to play for, and he’s an SEC coach.”
Before narrowing his decision to USC and Houston, Meyer also had Baylor, Mississippi State, and Arkansas on his short list, and he visited each of those, along with South Carolina, this spring.
Last season, Meyer passed for 2073 yards and 28 touchdowns. For his career, which began in Nevada, he’s passed for 8092 yards and 115 touchdowns.
