5-10 Colt Fowler of Byrnes on Thursday announced an offer from South Carolina. Fowler is considered one of the top playmaking guards in the state. He averaged 24 points and 11 assists per game last season.
He recently participated in team camp at USC, where Lamont Paris and his staff got a close-up look at him in action.
“I was down at South Carolina this morning, and I talked to Coach Paris and the staff, and they were just talking about my plan for me and my future,” Fowler said Thursday afternoon. “They like how I move in transition, and they like my play style. They were just talking about when I come in, what I need to improve on as a freshman. They want me to get me on the floor as a freshman.”
Fowler also has offers from Toledo, Florida Gulf Coast, UNC-Greensboro, Oral Roberts, Weber State, Wofford, and Charleston Southern. Getting the offer from the Gamecocks, however, creates a whole new recruiting ballgame for him.
“I was definitely a little shocked, but it’s definitely a great feeling,” Fowler said. “It’s my home team, the state of South Carolina. They are definitely at the top for sure. Definitely at the top.”
Fowler said he’s also hearing some from Clemson but has not set up a visit with the Tigers. For now, he plans to let things play out through the summer before finalizing a decision.
Fowler is the son of Byrnes head coach Layne Fowler, and his brother, Will, was a standout guard a couple of years ahead of him who played last season at Converse before transferring to Canisius.
