QB Jerry Meyer III (6-0 170) of Waxahachie, TX, announced a commitment to South Carolina on Friday morning, marking the second time he has committed to Kendal Briles. The new Gamecock offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach also recruited Mayer when he was at TCU and earned his commitment for the Horned Frogs last August.
Meyer decommitted from TCU in February, not long after Briles landed at USC. The two quickly rekindled their relationship, and that eventually led to Meyer picking the Gamecocks over Houston.
Meyer made an unofficial visit to USC in March, and he got the chance then to meet head coach Shane Beamer for the first time, and watch the Gamecock operation in person.
“I would just say the culture of the program, and how it’s run, and Coach Beamer does a great job of really installing it in the players’ heads that this is a brotherhood, and this is camaraderie,” Meyer said after that visit about what caught his attention. “They understand that they need to play for each other to have success on and off the field.’
But the long standing relationship with Briles is what one the day here for the Gamecocks.
I always kind of thought I’d be a great fit for him and kind of what he does with the offense,” Meyer said last month. “But I think it goes deeper than that. Just kind of the way he teaches and how he goes about things, and just the way he coaches. We’ve got to work as one when we’re on the same team and on the same field. I think once we spend more time around each other, if that were to eventually happen, I think that’s the way to do it, because the talent will speak for itself. You just add in the mental side of the ball, and get locked in with each other, then there’s no stopping you.”
Meyer will come to South Carolina with some impressive credentials. Last season, Meyer passed for 2073 yards and 28 touchdowns. For his career, which began in Nevada, he’s passed for 8092 yards and 115 touchdowns.
Meyer is the fourth commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2027 class.
