They’ve been close friends for years both on and off the football field. August 31st, USC’s Will Muschamp and North Carolina’s Mack Brown will stand on opposite sidelines opposing each other as head coaches for the first time when their teams open the 2019 season in the Belk College Kickoff in Charlotte.
Brown hired Muschamp away from Auburn to be his co-defensive coordinator in 2008. Later that year Muschamp was named “coach in-waiting” as the heir apparent to the Longhorn’s head coaching job once Brown retired. But Muschamp didn’t wait on that and took the Florida head coaching position in December of 2010.
Brown won a national championship at Texas in 2005 and coached there thru 2013. He spent the last five seasons at ESPN and is returning to Chapel Hill where he coached from 1988-1997. After going 1-10 in each of his first two seasons, Brown built a successful program at North Carolina winning ten games three times, but he did not win an ACC championship.
Friday Muschamp and Brown were together again at the Charlotte Country to promote their on the field meeting this August.
