Big, fast, and lengthy are pretty good attributes for a member of a state champion relay team. These measurements are also advantageous on the football field. Fortunately for Aidyn Wiggins (6-1, 182) of Byrnes High School in Duncan, he learned that fact a long time ago. Last week, Wiggins was a member of the Rebels’ 4X100 state champions after a solid campaign on the gridiron during the fall.
Thanks to his skills in the secondary, the 2027 prospect is drawing plenty of interest. With offers from LSU, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, North Carolina, Ole Miss, and Coastal Carolina, to name a few, Wiggins’ recruitment is certainly heating up. There’s also a flame burning just down I-85 from his home in the Upstate.
“It was a great feeling,” Wiggins told SportsTalk regarding his recent offer from Clemson. “Hometown team, grew up loving that team; my cousin (Tavien Feaster) played for ’em. Coach Reed’s a great defensive back coach, obviously, just now putting Avieon (Terrell) in the league and his brother A.J., and many other NFL players. Just getting an offer from them meant a lot.”
When asked how the coveted offer from Clemson came about, Wiggins seemed as excited as he was surprised.
“First, I went up there for a camp last year; I think I’ve been to like four game visits,” he explained. “The day I got the offer, I was actually lying down. I just happened to get a call, and it said “Clemson, South Carolina,” and it was Coach (DeAndre) McDaniel. He told me that I had an offer from him, he liked my family, and he liked how I looked. The next day, I got on the phone with Coach (Mike) Reed. He also said I had an offer from them. He wants me to get up there and get an OV date locked in with them.”
The Tigers see Wiggins as a boundary corner, which is the position he is currently playing at Byrnes. He says that comfort makes Clemson an attractive opportunity for him.
“They’re definitely my top school, just because of the program that Dabo Swinney has there,” Wiggins said. “Them being a winning program, knowing that I can win. I could potentially play for a Natty or play for a bowl game. Just playing under Coach Reed, just knowing that I’m going to be developed highly, to my max potential.”
Wiggins has a busy next couple of weeks planned, as he’ll visit Auburn at the end of this month. He’s got visits scheduled with Syracuse (June 5-7) and Virginia Tech (June 19-21). In the middle of the month, he’s still contemplating a visit to either LSU or Cincinnati with the possibility of a trip back to Clemson at the end of June.
He is planning to announce his commitment on July 3rd, but at this time, he’s not ready to name a favorite.
“It’s really hard to say who’s the top leader. They are pretty much all the same.”
Last season, Wiggins totaled 20 tackles and had 17 pass breakups.
