South Carolina had over 30 prospects on hand Sunday for food, games, and conversations at the indoor facility. Many of those prospects arrived with an offer in hand, but others have more to show the coaches. OT Jonathan Toney (6-6 290) of Dublin, GA, falls into the latter category.
Toney, who also visited USC for a spring practice, has offers from Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Navy, Troy, USF, Tulane, Charlotte, Memphis, UConn, East Carolina, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Georgia State. He’d no doubt love for his first Power Four offer to come from the Gamecocks, and he used Sunday to improve his chances for that.
“Talked to all the coaches to build out relationships, and just getting to know the coaches more,” Toney said. “I really liked the involvement of the coaches with the recruits. All the position coaches had teams, and we had to complete a game course in a certain amount of time.”
Gamecock offensive line coaches Randy Clements and Jason Smith will make the ultimate decision on an offer for Toney, and they’ve given him some pointers on how he can make that happen.
“The relationship we have is like going over film and telling me things they’d like to see out of me to help me become higher on their recruiting board,” Toney said. “The next step that they wanted me to do is go to camp so they can get a clear evaluation of me, and they can go from there.”
Toney plans to take Clements and Smith up on their invitation and will compete in the June 8th camp session.
He has official visits set in June with Appalachian State, Memphis, and Georgia Southern. This spring he also visited Georgia Tech, Georgia, Tulane, Appalachian State, Georgia State, Florida State, and others.
