STRecruiting: South Carolina sits in a good spot to get an official visit from OL Caleb Siler in June

OL Caleb Siler (6-8 270) of Gunter, TX has had a busy spring with no less than 15 unofficial visits. He started with South Carolina on April 9th and concluded with UCLA and Stanford this past weekend. In between, he also saw Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Utah, Arizona, Texas Tech, Kansas State, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Baylor, and SMU.

Next up for Siler in his recruiting process is determining his official visits. That’s a work in progress, but he said Sunday night there’s a good chance he’ll make one to South Carolina in June.

‘We’re still finalizing everything with the whole schedule and such,” Siler said.  “We’re still kind of penciling in everything and locking everything in.  We’re still narrowing down because we just finished the unofficials, but let’s say a range from three to ten.  But I don’t plan on taking ten officials.  I’m going to narrow it down to five.  I would not say I have any favorite, but I have a couple.  It’s a family decision, and me and my family are still talking through things.  I’d say I definitely enjoyed South Carolina, and I look forward to potentially coming back.”

USC offensive line coach Randy Clements and assistant offensive line coach Jason Smith have been recruiting Siler. Both knew him from their coaching days in Texas, and they have made a positive impression.

“I really like the guys.  They obviously have a great track record,” Siler said.  “Coach Smith, being a previous second overall draft pick and being a really good player, and Coach Clem being his coach, speaks volumes about how good of a coach he is.”

Last week, Clements made a visit to Gunter to see Siler and his parents and set the stage for what Clements hopes will be an official visit back to Columbia.

“I believe he met with my parents to eat a meal before, then came to my school to watch me practice,” Siler said. “I got to talk to him a little bit.  He just talked to me about the overall plan going forward with my recruitment to South Carolina, and the near future with OVs and such.”

Siler said he will have his official visits pinned down in the next two or three days. He plans to make his commitment announcement on June 18th because he will be leaving on a mission trip the next day.
